A woman and her dog were reportedly stabbed in Herndon, Northern Virginia, during a domestic incident over the weekend, according to Herndon police. The woman’s husband, identified as the suspect, was shot by responding officers.
The incident unfolded when the woman dialed 911 shortly before noon on Sunday, informing dispatchers that her husband had attacked her with a knife before abruptly ending the call.
Upon arriving at the scene, Herndon police approached the couple’s residence in the 900 block of 1st Place, where they were confronted by a man wielding a knife. In response, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect in the upper body.
Subsequently, upon entering the premises, emergency responders discovered the woman with a stab wound to her chest and the dog also injured from stab wounds.
Both the man and the woman were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, while the injured dog received urgent medical attention at an emergency veterinary clinic.
According to a spokesperson from the Herndon police department, the woman is currently in stable condition at the hospital, while the dog underwent surgery and is expected to recover. The suspect, who was shot by police, remains in intensive care. However, his identity has not been disclosed by authorities due to his hospitalization status.
Residents in the vicinity, including Linda Soller, expressed shock and concern over the incident, noting the prompt and careful attention given to the injured dog by emergency responders.
Investigators are probing the incident, with the Critical Incident Response Team leading the inquiry. This regional unit, comprising detectives, crime scene technicians, and commanders from 11 Northern Virginia agencies, is tasked with scrutinizing police-involved shootings. Notably, there is body camera footage of the incident, confirmed by a police spokesperson.
Although police had not received prior reports of domestic violence at the residence, neighbors expressed sadness and a desire to support the affected family during this challenging time.
