A stray Belgian Malinois discovered outside a supermarket in Slough has found a new life as a police dog.
Found wandering in Uxbridge Road last October, the two-year-old dog was in poor condition and underweight. Upon her rescue, a council kennel provider noticed her potential for learning and offered her to the military, prison service, and police as a service dog candidate.
Renamed Mally, the dog completed her training last month and now serves as a full-time police dog in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
Investigations by Slough Borough Council revealed that Mally had several owners before being abandoned. She was tied to a road sign and left in the rain for hours before freeing herself and being found by a passerby.
Councillor Ishrat Shah, responsible for public health and protection, highlighted the positive turn in Mally’s life: “This is a wonderful story that shows how a bad start doesn’t have to mean a bad ending. Mally’s rehoming prospects were bleak, but someone took a chance on her, and she put in the hard work to become a police dog.”
Mr. Shah also commended the council’s enforcement team for their dedication to helping unclaimed, stray, or abandoned dogs find homes or new purposes as working animals.
