Assistance Dog Charity Seeks Help Amidst Unprecedented Demand

by Lisa

The Pacific Assistance Dog Society (PADS) is urgently calling for support as the demand for assistance dogs in western Canada reaches an all-time high. The charity is struggling to keep up with requests, having placed 34 dogs so far this year, yet facing a waitlist of 536 people.

Chantel Bender from PADS highlighted the dire situation, stating, “We do our best to place them, but if something doesn’t change, if we don’t receive more donations, people could be waiting up to eight years for their service dog.”

Rising costs are exacerbating the issue. Dog food expenses have surged by 45%, and vet bills have increased by 50%, making it increasingly difficult for PADS to meet their financial needs. Despite these challenges, the society remains dedicated to breeding and training dogs that provide life-changing support for individuals with disabilities.

One such individual is Taylor Nile, who was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at 14 and has spent the last decade with limited mobility. Last year, Taylor received Dash, a mobility dog who has dramatically transformed her daily life.

“I refer to it as life before Dash, and life after Dash,” Taylor shared. “This past year has been so amazing, I’ve gained so much independence and confidence.”

Dash’s harness provides Taylor with support when standing, and the retriever assists with various tasks around the house. “He’s always getting stuff for me, whether it’s my shoes or his leash,” Taylor laughed. “I have trouble sometimes getting my medications, so I just say, ‘Hey Dash, can you go get my meds?’ and he brings them to me.”

Dash has enabled Taylor to regain a level of independence she never thought possible. She can now grocery shop and pick up prescriptions on her own, alleviating many of her previous concerns.

“When I first applied for him, I was focused on my physical health needs,” Taylor explained. “I didn’t realize how much he was going to help my mental health.”

Taylor’s mother, Deanna, echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the profound impact Dash has had on the entire family. “Seeing Taylor more confident in herself and her abilities, thanks to Dash, has been life-changing for her and as a mom, I’m just so proud.”

This week, International Assistance Dog Week, celebrates the vital contributions of these animals. PADS has partnered with a donor to match all donations through August, allowing the organization to continue its crucial work. Donations can be made on their website.
