WagWorld, a beloved dog resort in Fletcher, is set to expand its offerings with the addition of a bar and event center, further enhancing its reputation as a haven for dogs and their owners. The new facilities, scheduled to open on September 1, will include a dedicated space where dogs can roam off-leash while their owners enjoy a drink or participate in events.
A New Era for WagWorld
Akasha Nickolas, who co-owns WagWorld with Cathy Lusk, is driven by her passion for dogs. After transitioning from careers in vacation sales and real estate to focusing solely on her canine interests, Nickolas sees WagWorld as the culmination of her career and personal aspirations. “WagWorld is my future, it’s my retirement,” she said.
The dog resort, which accommodates no more than 20 dogs at a time, prioritizes quality care over quantity. This approach includes providing a safe environment for dogs that may be considered aggressive elsewhere. “We take our time and work with dogs that need extra care,” Lusk explained.
Features of the New Bar and Event Center
The new bar and event center will feature an outdoor area where dogs can be off-leash, provided they are spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Membership fees will grant access to this area and include services such as waste management by field managers trained to handle dog aggression.
The bar and event center will operate seven days a week, starting at 8 or 9 a.m. It will offer live music from Thursday to Sunday and feature a year-round food truck with a rotating selection of vendors. The event space will be available for weddings, parties, and other large gatherings.
Community Focus and Inclusivity
Nickolas emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for all community members, including those from LGBTQ+ and animal welfare organizations. WagWorld will host “prideful pup” nights and drag events, and will support local Pride initiatives. To cater to all preferences, the bar will have alcohol-free nights every Tuesday.
In addition to its social and recreational offerings, WagWorld is committed to giving back to the community. The bar will use recycled aluminum instead of glass, with proceeds from the sale of the aluminum benefiting humane societies. The resort will also host adoption events to support local animal rescues.
Looking Ahead
Nickolas envisions WagWorld as a “mecca of welcoming,” aiming to become a well-known and inclusive destination in Western North Carolina. “I want WagWorld to be a household name and a place where everyone feels welcome,” she said.
The development of WagWorld’s bar and event center marks an exciting expansion for the resort, reinforcing its commitment to both exceptional care for dogs and community engagement.
