Donations Fund New Shelter for New Ulm Dog Park

by Lisa

A new shelter is being built at the New Ulm dog park, thanks to the generosity of local donors. This project comes after the previous structure deteriorated and needed replacement.

Joey Schugel, the Park and Recreation Director, explained that the new shelter will feature a sturdy design made of steel, with a 14-by-14-foot tin roof and a 16-by-16-foot concrete foundation. Positioned in the central part of the large dog area, the shelter will provide additional shade for park visitors and their pets. Schugel also mentioned plans for some turf improvements in the park.

“The small dog area’s shelter will stay in place,” Schugel noted. “Originally, we planned to address this project later, but thanks to unexpected funding, we can move forward now.”

The funding was provided by the Realtor Association of Southern Minnesota, which donated $7,500. According to Schugel, the association was looking for community spaces to enhance, and the dog park shelter project aligned perfectly with their goals.

Schugel praised the volunteers who originally advocated for and funded the construction of the dog park. “The dog park exists because a group of dedicated volunteers worked with the city to make it happen. They raised the money for its creation, and now we are continuing their work with this new, improved shelter,” he said.

Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, and Schugel expressed excitement about the long-term benefits the shelter will offer. He added that the Park and Recreation Department is always open to ideas and donations for further improving city parks.

“Donations have been critical to this project,” Schugel said. “We welcome community input and support for future enhancements, whether it’s for the dog park or other parks in the area.”

Currently, only the concrete pad has been installed, with weather conditions determining the timeline for completing the structure. “The steel is being painted, and while everything is in process, we aim to finish by October. In the meantime, the small dog area will remain open,” Schugel explained. Turf restoration efforts will continue during the waiting period.
