Pasadena Dog Owners Alert: Poisonous Food Left in Streets Poses Danger to Pets

by Lisa

Los Angeles County officials are urging Pasadena residents to help identify an individual responsible for leaving toxic food near a local dog boarding and daycare facility, posing a serious risk to dogs in the area.

The alarming incidents have occurred near Dogtopia of East Pasadena, where dangerous foods such as grapes and chocolate—both highly toxic to dogs—have been found mixed with rice or noodles, designed to attract unsuspecting pets. These incidents have prompted concerns from local officials, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who has called for community vigilance in identifying the perpetrator.

“Animal cruelty should never be tolerated,” Barger stated in a news release. “It is outrageous that someone is deliberately trying to harm dogs and their owners, who are simply enjoying a walk along Foothill Boulevard.”

A Disturbing Pattern

The Humane Society of the United States warns that even small amounts of grapes or chocolate can be lethal to dogs, causing serious health issues and potentially fatal outcomes. According to a surveillance video released by Dogtopia, a person was seen crouching near a dirt patch on a street corner outside the facility, leaving items on the ground. The shaded corner obscured what exactly was being left, but the person’s intent appeared suspicious.

Jacks Vasquez, the owner of Dogtopia, revealed that this incident was just one of many. For several months, food hazards such as grapes and chocolate M&Ms have been scattered along a 1.5-mile stretch of Foothill Boulevard, between Sierra Madre and Rosemead Boulevards.

“I’m sick to my stomach knowing this is happening in broad daylight,” Vasquez expressed. As an experienced animal care professional, she emphasized the grave danger these foods pose to dogs. “Even the smallest amount of grapes can be lethal, and chocolate can lead to severe illness and costly veterinary bills.”

Community on Alert

Vasquez has been alerting her customers to the threat, but she remains concerned that the warning hasn’t reached the wider Pasadena community. Pasadena police are taking the matter seriously, with Chief Gene Harris urging the public to report any suspicious activity in the area. “Any cruelty to animals will be met with assertive enforcement,” Harris assured.

Local officials are intensifying their efforts to prevent further harm and are asking residents to stay vigilant. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact Pasadena authorities.
