A Jack Russell terrier, who spent several harrowing weeks eluding capture while running along busy highways near Newark Liberty International Airport, has been safely rescued. The dog, now named “Monkey,” was finally apprehended by a professional trapper after numerous sightings and rescue attempts, according to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge.
The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge shared the rescue update on September 10, revealing that Monkey, estimated to be less than a year old, had been evading capture despite repeated efforts by rescuers. The situation was described as “constant and terrifying” due to the hazardous environment around the airport, located approximately 15 miles southwest of New York City.
Monkey was initially spotted running along the highways, and it is suspected that he may have been abandoned before being seen in the area. The Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, a nonprofit organization, played a crucial role in rescuing Monkey.
Upon his rescue, Monkey was taken to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, where he received immediate medical attention. He was treated for fleas, ticks, and parasites, and was also vaccinated. Despite his traumatic experience, Monkey quickly adapted to human interaction, showing remarkable resilience by warming up to people within minutes of being rescued.
Currently, Monkey is undergoing rehabilitation at the shelter, where he is learning to walk on a leash, interact with other dogs, and become comfortable around people. The shelter has been working with him to address his fears and help him adjust to his new environment.
The shelter’s updates indicate that Monkey is making significant progress. “He is doing great with his daily rehabilitation sessions — so curious and treat-motivated,” the shelter reported. While Monkey is not yet ready for adoption, he will eventually need a permanent home. The shelter emphasized that ongoing consistent training and socialization will be crucial for Monkey to overcome his past traumas and find a loving home.
