Four Labrador mixes—Axle, Buddy, Lola, and Drake—are set to find new homes at the Animal Rescue Center starting Wednesday, September 18. These dogs were part of a rescue operation involving 20 animals found in neglectful conditions on August 14.
The four pups have successfully completed treatment for severe sarcoptic mange and are now healthy enough for adoption. Meanwhile, Cocoa, a pregnant dog rescued in the same incident, along with her puppies, remains under care, with the puppies expected to be available for adoption in about a month.
Laura Page, Senior Operations Manager, shared her experience when the Office of Animal Welfare first contacted them. “They mentioned a particularly distressing case involving one dog,” she recounted. Upon further investigation, the BVSPCA discovered multiple dogs suffering from neglect and abuse.
With a warrant in hand, they approached the property and uncovered a total of 20 dogs in need of urgent assistance. Page noted the challenges faced by staff during the rescue, explaining, “Our team had to don full personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure safety while handling the dogs.”
The dogs underwent extensive treatment, including topical medications and baths to address the sarcoptic mange. Page explained, “The topical treatment kills the mites, while baths help eliminate dead mites and debris, promoting skin healing.”
The mange was severe enough that it led to the death of one dog, highlighting the condition’s brutality. “The affected dogs experience total hair loss and severe skin deterioration,” Page added.
During the rescue, Page also assisted in delivering puppies, a process that began late at night and extended into the early hours of the morning.
Reflecting on the dogs’ recovery, Page expressed optimism. “They have made remarkable progress. The open wounds have healed, and their coats are returning to health.”
The adoption event for Axle, Buddy, Lola, and Drake will take place at the Animal Rescue Center, located at 19022 Shingle Point Rd, Georgetown, adjacent to the Eastern Shore Pet Resort. Adoption hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
