Denton Plans Independent Review of Animal Services After Dog’s Euthanasia Sparks Protests

by Lisa

Denton officials are set to launch an independent review of animal services following public outrage over the euthanasia of a dog before its owner could retrieve it from a shelter. The incident involved Gunner, a 12-year-old Labrador belonging to John and Courtney Gilcrease, which has sparked significant protests and calls for accountability.

On September 3, Gunner went missing and was subsequently taken to the Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center. According to John Gilcrease, he became aware of Gunner’s absence when the dog failed to return for dinner at their family farm. After searching the area, he discovered Gunner’s whereabouts through social media.

On the morning of September 4, the Gilcreases contacted the shelter and were informed that Gunner was there, but the facility would not reopen until September 5. When they arrived to pick him up, they were shocked to learn that Gunner had been euthanized, with shelter staff stating he was in pain and could not walk without assistance.

The city announced its decision to hire Shelter Savvy, an independent firm, to conduct a thorough review of the procedures and policies at Denton’s animal shelters. The aim is to ensure compliance with best practices and identify areas for improvement.

“By examining the current operating procedures thoroughly and openly with the independent consultant, the City of Denton aims to ensure that our Animal Services Department meets the highest standards for animal welfare,” city officials stated.

Despite the city’s policy to hold dogs for at least 72 hours before considering euthanasia, it has been reported that this hold time can be waived if deemed necessary to alleviate animal suffering. The city’s spokesperson noted that Gunner’s condition warranted the decision to euthanize him, although initial claims of prior veterinary consultation regarding the euthanasia were retracted.

As the investigation unfolds, the Gilcreases continue to advocate for justice, stating, “I’m not letting them get away with this.”
