Canine Heroes: Animal Blood Bank Expands Donation Clinics Near Calgary

by Lisa

In a heartwarming initiative, the Canadian Animal Blood Bank is increasing its dog blood donation clinics in the Calgary area. The organization is set to hold a fully booked clinic on the Tsuut’ina Nation, where canine volunteers will help save the lives of other animals in need.

Laurie Dyrgas, the regional unit manager for Calgary, expressed excitement about the event. “People are thrilled to have their dogs contribute to the community,” she shared during an interview on CBC Radio’s Calgary Eyeopener. “The dogs usually seem quite happy, although we sometimes see a little wiggling on the table since these larger breeds aren’t accustomed to being up high.”

The need for canine blood donors is significant; Alberta ranks second in Canada, following Ontario, for dog blood demand. Transfusions can be critical for various medical situations, including cancer treatment, managing toxic exposures, and supporting surgical procedures or trauma recovery.

To ensure a positive experience for the furry donors, the clinic offers plenty of rewards, including belly rubs, chin scratches, and liver treats. This encouragement not only helps ease the dogs’ nerves but also reinforces the bond between pets and their human companions as they work together for a noble cause.

The initiative underscores the important role that our canine friends play in the healthcare of pets, reminding us that dogs can indeed be heroes in their own right.
