The Coffs Harbour Dog Training Club recently held an extensive Quadruple Obedience, Rally, and Trick trial at their venue on Rex Hardaker Lane. Competitors traveled from across the country to participate in this prestigious event, taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather.
Notable Competitors and Judges
Among the participants was Kym Wakeman from Queensland, who brought her Pumi, Hazel, to compete under the scrutiny of Trick Judge Lionel Blumel. Blumel, a well-regarded figure in the dog training community, is known for his expertise in “Dances with Dogs” and various shows throughout Southeast Queensland. He also breeds Boston Terriers and has experience with Dalmatians, Curly Coated Retrievers, and American Cocker Spaniels.
Blumel praised the high performance of many dogs in the Trick section. “Several dogs excelled, particularly in the advanced classes,” he reported. “One dog achieved a perfect score of 100 out of 100 in the Advanced Tricks section—a remarkable accomplishment.”
Training Insights and Popular Breeds
Blumel emphasized that dogs showing eagerness to work and a desire to please their handlers typically excel in Tricks. Herding and working breeds, such as Border Collies, Labs, and Golden Retrievers, are often the most successful in these categories. Their natural aptitude for learning and performing commands makes them popular choices in both Obedience and Tricks trials.
Local Talent and Future Prospects
Maria Priori, Secretary of the Coffs Harbour Dog Club, is currently training to become a Trick Judge. Having met the prerequisites of volunteering at trials and training a dog to a high standard, Priori is excited about this new opportunity. “It’s been an incredible journey, and now I’m thrilled to see I actually qualify,” she said.
The trials showcased a diverse range of skills and highlighted the dedication of both handlers and their canine companions. The event not only celebrated achievements but also provided valuable experience for future competitions and judging opportunities.
