An animal rescue organization has resumed operations after temporarily halting activities due to an outbreak of parvovirus, a potentially lethal canine virus.
Dogs Trust Kenilworth was compelled to close its doors on September 10 following the confirmation of a parvovirus case within its facility. This highly contagious illness can lead to severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
As of Saturday, the center is welcoming visitors again and is urgently appealing for new homes for the dogs who have remained in the charity’s care longer than anticipated.
The charity emphasized that its rapid response to the outbreak prevented further risk to other animals on-site. “We are pleased to report that none of our dogs are exhibiting symptoms and are in good health,” the organization stated.
Alison Creaton, assistant manager at Dogs Trust Kenilworth, expressed gratitude towards the community and supporters for their understanding during this challenging period. “We also want to acknowledge our staff for their relentless efforts to care for the dogs under these trying circumstances,” she added.
During the three-week closure, the center implemented enhanced cleaning protocols, including limiting staff contact, barrier nursing, and providing enrichment activities for the dogs to keep them entertained while maintaining isolation.
Moving forward, the charity continues to enforce stringent cleaning measures and has requested that all visitors ensure their pets are fully vaccinated before arriving at the center.
As part of its reopening, Dogs Trust has launched an urgent rehoming campaign, as no adoptions could take place during the closure. Among the dogs still seeking forever homes are Teddy, a lurcher, and Peter, a crossbreed.
“We invite anyone considering adopting a dog to visit us at the center, meet our dogs, and help them find loving homes in time for the holiday season,” Ms. Creaton stated.
The center operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12:00 BST to 16:00 BST, with no appointments necessary.
