Calgarians Invited to Elect New Dog Mayor of Culture and Entertainment District

by Lisa

Calgarians are gearing up for a unique municipal election that allows local dog owners to vote for the next Mayor of the Culture and Entertainment District. This lighthearted contest is set to take place at Pixel Park during the final weekend of September and the first weekend of October.

In a refreshing departure from traditional politics, the election offers dog owners the opportunity to showcase their pets while competing for exciting prizes. “We adore dogs in the Culture and Entertainment District, and they seem to love us just as much,” stated Emma Stevens, Director of Communications and External Relations at the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC). “We’re thrilled to introduce this inaugural contest for the Dog Mayor, celebrating the incredible dogs that frequent Pixel Park along with their human companions.”

Dog owners interested in nominating their pets can submit their applications to the East Team at Pixel Park from September 27 to 29 and again from October 4 to 6. Voting will occur online from October 9 to 24.

Stevens emphasized the importance of community engagement, urging participants to rally their friends, family, and fellow dog owners to ensure their pup’s representation in the contest. “We encourage these candidates and their humans to put their best paw forward and craft a campaign that reflects their unique personalities,” she added.

To help prepare candidates for their electoral run, CMLC is offering complimentary dog training sessions on October 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Pixel Park.

The impetus for this whimsical contest, according to Stevens, stems from the overwhelming popularity of dog-related programming in the Culture and Entertainment District. “We’ve seen a tremendous turnout at the off-leash dog park in Pixel Park, with regular visitors coming daily or multiple times a day for their walks,” she noted. “Many people also join us on weekends for live music and other events, bringing their dogs along for the fun. This contest is our way of celebrating the engaged community of both humans and dogs that make this space so special.”
