Daniella Abreu, a 24-year-old medical assistant from Stuart, Florida, suffered a devastating injury that resulted in the loss of her right eye after her dog Blu lunged for a rabbit during a nighttime walk. Using an old retractable leash due to a frayed regular one, Abreu was struck in the face by the leash’s handle when Blu pulled away, causing severe injuries, including a split eyelid, a fractured bone under her eye, and a detached retina.
Despite immediate medical attention, Abreu underwent multiple surgeries and ultimately had her eye removed. The incident led to significant emotional and physical challenges for her, including severe migraines, PTSD, and anxiety. Abreu described the impact of the accident as life-altering, stating that she had to put her life on pause, going from being active to bedridden for months.
With the help of her neighbors, who started a GoFundMe campaign for her recovery, Abreu has been seeing a therapist and was fitted with a prosthetic eye. She is learning to adapt to her new reality, including relearning how to navigate daily activities with only one functioning eye.
