In a tragic incident in North Queensland, Australia, a woman has lost her arm following a brutal attack by her own dog on Friday morning. The 34-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the attack, which occurred around 7 a.m. local time.
Queensland Police were the first responders at the scene, where they applied a tourniquet to the woman’s arm to halt severe blood loss. Reports indicate that her right arm was severed below the elbow, but paramedics managed to retrieve the detached limb.
During a press conference, District Duty Officer and Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick expressed relief that the woman received timely first aid. While her condition was critical upon arrival at the hospital, it stabilized to serious but stable by 11 a.m.
“Her blood loss was quite extensive, but that tourniquet pretty much ceased it,” Warrick stated.
In the aftermath of the attack, police were compelled to euthanize the dog, which was described as a large breed, possibly a pit bull. Officers indicated that two other dogs were taken into custody by the RSPCA for further evaluation.
Senior Sergeant Warrick explained the necessity of the dog’s euthanasia, stating, “The dog was very angry, very aggressive, and was trying to get outside.” He emphasized that the safest option to contain the animal was to euthanize it.
Interestingly, Warrick mentioned that officers had responded to the same address regarding the dog just weeks prior to this incident.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing screams during the attack. Rob Moore, a neighbor, recounted, “Five minutes later, there were 10 police cars and three ambulances here.” Another resident revealed that he had previously been injured by the same dog, resulting in visible scars on his arms.
