A dog that had spent over eight months wandering the streets of Missouri has finally found safety, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Ozarks Pet Rescue. The rescue organization announced the successful capture of the dog, named Larry, on Sunday, October 13, after numerous attempts to bring him to safety.
In a follow-up Facebook post the next day, Ozarks Pet Rescue provided a health update on Larry, revealing that he weighed approximately 22 pounds during his examination at Williams Veterinary Clinic. The veterinary team estimated Larry to be around three years old. While he received a largely positive health assessment, confirming he was free from heartworms and Giardia, the examination also revealed he was suffering from tick disease and whipworms.
Larry underwent a significant transformation during his grooming session, shedding two pounds of excess fur that had become matted and obstructed his vision. Despite his rough past, the dog is slowly acclimating to human interaction. “He gave our board member a few small kisses and enjoyed some belly rubs, but he remains frightened, which will require time and patience,” the rescue organization reported. Following a period of decompression, Larry is set to begin training with their staff in a week or two.
The rescue team utilized a tranquilizer gun to capture Larry after attempts with live traps proved unsuccessful. This operation was supported by a local animal control officer and a group of ten volunteers.
After his grooming, Ozarks Pet Rescue shared another heartwarming update, emphasizing the essence of their mission: “This guy is what rescue is about, helping those who need us the most!” The organization also addressed criticisms of animal rescues, stating, “We always strive to remain neutral and prioritize the well-being of all animals… We don’t seek recognition; these dogs and cats deserve praise for their resilience until we have the opportunity to help them.”
The post included three photos of Larry in his new, trimmed appearance, dressed in a red and yellow sweater. In two images, he is seen standing on a dirt path, while in the third, he rests comfortably in a large animal crate.
In the latest update, Ozarks Pet Rescue confirmed that Larry has received all necessary veterinary care and is now entering his “official stray hold” phase. This means the organization will begin searching local databases and community resources for Larry’s original owners. While he has been neutered, Larry lacks a microchip, prompting the rescue to encourage any potential owners to contact them for verification.
