When sisters Meghan Wedge and Sarah Bauer set out to rescue an injured dog, they had no idea they would soon welcome ten adorable puppies into their lives.
The unexpected journey began outside Meghan’s workplace in Dalton, Georgia, when colleagues alerted her to a severely injured dog in the parking lot. Describing the scene to PBS39, Wedge said, “As soon as she got up, she’d fall back down. When she finally managed to stand, it was clear she couldn’t bear weight on one of her back legs.” Determined to help the dog, later named Izzy, Meghan took to social media, seeking assistance instead of contacting animal control. That’s when she reached out to her sister Sarah in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, leading to a pivotal decision.
“Sarah asked if she could take the dog in,” Meghan recalled. “I was hesitant, asking if she was sure about this commitment.” However, Sarah was resolute. The sisters arranged to meet in Virginia, where Sarah would take Izzy home.
The first priority for Sarah was a veterinary examination, where the extent of Izzy’s injuries became alarmingly clear. “Due to COVID-19 restrictions, I couldn’t accompany her into the clinic, which made it even harder,” Sarah shared. The vet informed her that Izzy had a dislocated hip, abrasions on her legs, and signs she had been hit by a vehicle. To Sarah’s horror, she also learned that Izzy had been shot with buckshot. “It broke my heart to think that someone could hurt such a sweet dog intentionally,” she expressed.
As Sarah examined Izzy’s X-rays, she noticed multiple tiny white spots indicating the buckshot scattered throughout Izzy’s body. This revelation deeply affected Meghan, who has a rescue dog of her own that had suffered abuse. “To me, dogs are angels. It’s sickening to think anyone could hurt them,” she said.
Adding to the shocking news, the vet revealed that Izzy was pregnant. “The vet mentioned that she found a heartbeat,” Sarah recalled, elated. But the revelation didn’t end there—Izzy was carrying not just one, but nine puppies.
“The vet tech came out and said: ‘We don’t just have a puppy; we have puppies! Want to guess how many?’ I thought maybe three or four, and she said: ‘Nine!’ It was unbelievable,” Sarah recounted. “Izzy has really come alive since I first met her. The puppies have brought out her spirit, but I know she’s still in discomfort, especially when she navigates stairs or plays with them.”
To help Sarah manage the veterinary costs, which exceed $4,000, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with expenses and support the growing family.
It’s clear that Izzy has found a loving home with Sarah, who is dedicated to providing her and her new puppies the best possible life.
