3 Reasons Pet Owners Stop Feeding Raw Meat-Based Dog Food

by Lisa

Recent research from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich has shed light on why some pet owners discontinue raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) for their dogs. While the motivations behind adopting these diets are well-documented, understanding the reasons for discontinuation has received less attention. This study examined the experiences of dog owners who initially embraced RMBDs and subsequently made the switch to other food options, revealing three primary reasons for this change.

The Appeal of Raw Meat-Based Diets

The increasing popularity of RMBDs among dog owners aligns with a broader consumer trend towards less processed food. A Packaged Facts survey found that two-thirds of pet owners prefer to buy less processed pet food, and a study by Vypr indicated that 61% of consumers have significant concerns about ultra-processed foods. This shift is reflected in a survey of over 600 pet owners across Belgium, France, Canada, the U.K., and the U.S., where approximately 25% reported feeding their pets biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) in the past six months.

Reasons for Discontinuation

The study identified three key reasons dog owners stopped feeding RMBDs:

Gastrointestinal Intolerance

Gastrointestinal issues were the most frequently cited reason, with 37% of respondents reporting problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, or gas as symptoms of intolerance. Nearly 24% of owners indicated they switched diets due to these gastrointestinal signs.

Onset of Disease

The second reason was the diagnosis of health conditions while the dog was on an RMBD, affecting 20% of owners. Among these cases, 64% were linked to gastrointestinal diseases, with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) commonly mentioned.

Lack of Acceptance

Finally, 15% of dog owners reported that their pets simply refused to eat raw food, leading them to seek alternative diets.

Additional Factors Influencing Dietary Changes

Beyond the primary reasons, several secondary factors also influenced pet owners’ decisions to transition away from RMBDs:

Cost and Convenience: RMBDs can be more expensive and time-consuming to prepare compared to kibble or canned diets.

Health and Safety Concerns: Some owners, despite initially supporting RMBDs, later expressed worries about potential infections or nutritional deficiencies.

Implications for Pet Food Formulators and Veterinarians

The findings of this study highlight the significant role of gastrointestinal health in the decision-making process of pet owners regarding RMBDs. As such, veterinarians are encouraged to conduct comprehensive dietary histories for dogs exhibiting gastrointestinal symptoms and to remain open to recommending dietary changes when necessary.

This research not only provides insight into the challenges pet owners face with RMBDs but also underscores the need for continued education and support from veterinary professionals to help owners make informed decisions about their pets’ nutrition.
