A veterinarian has outlined five critical practices he would avoid with his own dog, highlighting the potential dangers of common treats and safety precautions for pet owners. Ben the Vet recently shared his insights in a TikTok video, cautioning pet owners about the risks associated with certain dog treats, particularly bones and antlers.
In his video, Ben recounted a harrowing experience that shaped his perspective on feeding dogs bones. “After spending half an hour performing an enema to remove bone fragments from a dog’s colon, I would never consider it safe,” he explained. He warned that bones can pose significant risks, stating that they are often too hard for dogs to chew, leading to serious dental injuries such as slab fractures of their carnassial teeth. This condition can be painful and may necessitate tooth extraction if root abscesses form.
Moreover, Ben noted that bones can also pose gastrointestinal risks. “Swallowed large pieces can cause blockages in the esophagus or intestines, leading to severe constipation,” he cautioned. Given these risks, he advises pet owners to avoid feeding bones to their dogs altogether.
Ben also shared additional precautions he takes as a responsible pet owner. He emphasized the importance of not allowing dogs to walk off-leash near roads. This practice stems from a traumatic incident he witnessed at age 16, where a shih tzu was narrowly missed by a vehicle. “Even well-trained dogs can get startled and run off,” he warned.
Another crucial safety tip he provided is to never leave dogs unattended in parked vehicles, even with a window cracked open. The interior of a car can heat up rapidly, posing a significant risk of heatstroke.
Ben also urged pet owners to reconsider the practice of feeding raw meat to their dogs, citing the risk of bacterial infections. “The dangers don’t just affect the dog; they can also extend to family members, especially if the dog licks anyone after eating raw meat,” he explained.
Lastly, Ben stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for dogs. “While it’s easy to indulge our pets, I would strive to keep my dog slim to reduce the risk of developing arthritis and to promote a longer, healthier life,” he stated.
With these insights, Ben aims to inform pet owners about safe practices and the risks associated with popular dog treats, encouraging them to prioritize their pets’ health and safety.
