Halloween came early for furry friends in New York City as they strutted their stuff at the 34th annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade on October 19. This beloved event, held in the East Village, featured dozens of creatively costumed canines and drew hundreds of enthusiastic spectators eager to see the spectacle.
Originally taking place at the Tompkins Square Dog Run within Tompkins Square Park, the parade was relocated to Avenue A due to construction. This year, the parade route extended along Avenue A from 13th to 7th Street, providing plenty of space for attendees and participants alike.
The furry participants began lining up at noon, with the parade kicking off around 1 p.m. Local pups showcased a range of delightful costumes, from adorable pizza slices to iconic characters like Austin Powers. The atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement as dogs and their owners reveled in the festive spirit.
Joseph Borduin, a commercial photographer and dedicated volunteer, has been the driving force behind organizing the parade since 2020. However, he has announced that 2024 will mark his final year in this role. Borduin explained to Gothamist that the responsibilities have grown too complex for one person to handle, stating, “I need another, bigger entity to take over this beast because it’s just too much for a small dog park to manage.”
