Jake Parmigiani, a military veteran, has found an unexpected source of healing and fulfillment in his Port Stephens mobile dog gym, “Run-A-Mutt,” which he launched in May 2024. What began as a business venture has transformed into what Jake describes as “the best therapy of my life,” providing a unique way for him to engage in mindfulness while working with dogs on treadmills.
Jake’s journey towards mental wellness began when he recognized that he was teetering on the brink of a breakdown after years spent in high-pressure roles. Since the age of seventeen, he had faced the stresses and conflicts inherent in his career, ultimately leading to anxiety and anger that he struggled to manage. He admitted to being in denial about his mental health challenges, including symptoms of PTSD stemming from his military service and the rigors of a probationary period as a paramedic.
Determined to take control of his mental health, especially with a young son relying on him, Jake sought professional help. Through therapy, he gained valuable insights into recognizing his triggers and learned techniques to counter intrusive thoughts and overwhelming emotions. This newfound awareness allows him to be fully present while interacting with the dogs he trains. “I can now flick a switch that grounds me with each dog, instinctively building the trust and rapport they need,” he explained.
In his mobile dog gym, Jake employs a triage approach to assess each pup’s unique challenges, whether it’s anxiety, fears, or sensory issues. He expresses no regrets about converting an old ambulance into his mobile training facility, turning what could have been a painful reminder of his past into a positive and uplifting environment.
“Dogs make me happy,” he declared, noting that his greatest companion is Sully, a Catahoula cross he adopted at a crucial moment in his life. Sully’s energetic personality provided the focus Jake needed to rejuvenate his own mindset.
Beneath his tough exterior lies a compassionate heart, and Jake has poured his experiences into nurturing and expanding Run-A-Mutt. His background in strength and conditioning, along with skills developed through fly fishing and youth mentorship, equips him with a distinctive approach to canine care.
Jake uses specialized techniques in desensitization, environmental observation, and active listening to tailor his methods for each dog. Whether it’s interval sprints for energetic breeds or leisurely strolls for those that prefer a slower pace, he adapts his training to unlock the potential in every dog he encounters.
In helping dogs and their anxious owners, Jake finds himself on a path of mutual rescue, embodying the healing power of companionship and care.
