In a heartwarming turn of events, a stray dog named Makena has transitioned from a month of homelessness to finding refuge in a loving foster home. The story, shared by dog rescuer Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, highlights the plight of a pup who begged for food by staring through neighbors’ gates around Los Angeles, California.
The Struggle for Survival
For over a month, Makena wandered the streets, relying on the kindness of strangers to provide food. Hall received a distressing message about the dog’s condition, describing how Makena would visit various homes, desperately seeking help. “She would beg at homes for food, looking into gates,” Hall shared on Facebook.
Determined to rescue the vulnerable dog, Hall enlisted the help of volunteer Mary Nakiso. They immediately drove to Makena’s last known location, where they spent hours trying to trap her. Unfortunately, their efforts were thwarted when a neighbor kicked the trap, sending the frightened dog fleeing into the night.
A New Hope
Despite the setback, Makena reappeared the next morning, drawn to the kindness of a neighbor named Janet, who had been leaving food and water out for her. Hall recognized this as an opportunity to capture Makena. “I was like, ‘This is our chance,’” she recalled.
With the support of Janet and another neighbor, Hall set up a plan to corner Makena. This time, they were successful—Makena, feeling more comfortable, was gently picked up by the neighbor, allowing Hall and Nakiso to finally bring her to safety.
A Safe Haven
Once in Hall’s car, Makena began to relax. Initially placed in a crate, she soon moved to the front seat, snuggling into the blankets. Hall described the emotional moment: “I looked over, and I saw her nose peeking out from under the blanket. This girl’s month of homelessness was over, and she knew it.”
Makena was taken to Camino Pet Hospital for a thorough checkup and bath. Thankfully, she was healthy and ready for foster care. Hall was thrilled to report that Makena quickly found a loving foster home, where she has been thriving ever since.
Looking Forward
While Makena continues her search for a forever home, she is enjoying the warmth and safety of her foster family. Hall expressed her joy for the dog’s newfound comfort: “Makena is such a love. Now she can finally sleep and close both eyes after being homeless for so long.”
Makena’s story is a poignant reminder of the resilience of animals and the importance of community support in rescuing those in need. With her days of wandering behind her, Makena is now one step closer to finding her permanent family.
