In an important development for those living with low vision, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT has launched SeeWay, a pioneering initiative that marks Australia’s first comprehensive support network for individuals affected by visual impairments.
According to a recent media release, SeeWay seeks to enhance the ongoing support provided by eyecare professionals to individuals facing permanent vision changes due to various conditions, including genetic disorders, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetes. These conditions often leave affected individuals feeling uncertain about where to find practical resources and emotional support.
“Many individuals experiencing low vision do not qualify for formal disability funding, yet they still require assistance in managing daily life challenges,” the release stated. “SeeWay is designed to bridge this gap, offering a pathway for individuals to access necessary guidance and support at an earlier stage.”
The program features “Navigate Your Journey,” a free online support network that aids individuals in understanding their lifestyle choices and personal goals. This platform delivers tailored content and connects users to practical services, including daily living assistance, transportation options, and financial entitlements.
Furthermore, SeeWay offers eyecare professionals a “seamless” solution to empower clients, enabling them to lead full and independent lives without adding significant demands to their practices.
“By fostering connections, building confidence, and extending support beyond clinical consultations, SeeWay enables individuals to manage changes in their vision with greater independence,” stated the release. “This holistic approach empowers users and enriches the support already provided by their healthcare providers.”
The official launch of SeeWay took place at the Vision 2020 Australia Parliamentary Friends Group for Eye Health and Vision Care event last week, where it received an overwhelmingly positive response from industry professionals.
Dale Cleaver, CEO of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, expressed pride in launching SeeWay and its pilot program, Navigate Your Journey. “This initiative is aimed at the underserved market of individuals experiencing moderate low vision,” he said. “We believe this platform will be a game-changer for both people and professionals, and we look forward to its full rollout in early 2025.”
