Niall Harbison has dedicated the past three years to protecting and assisting the numerous street dogs on the Thai island of Koh Samui. He founded the charity Happy Doggo, aiming to support not only homeless dogs but also local pets whose owners struggle financially. To date, Happy Doggo has sterilized over ninety percent of the street dog population on the island and feeds nearly a thousand street dogs every day.
Among the many grateful dogs is Snickers, a street dog who has gained attention for her unique way of showing appreciation. Every day, she brings Harbison small gifts to “pay” for the meals he provides her, often choosing colorful wrappers, toys, shoes, or even balls. With excitement and pride, Snickers presents her treasures to Harbison, who always greets her with warmth.
Recently, Harbison shared an uplifting update on Snickers’s progress. “I’ve watched her become super secure and make the transition to more of a pet than a street dog in the last three weeks since she came into our rescue,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
A Beach Day for Snickers
In a heartwarming turn of events, Harbison decided to take Snickers on her first-ever beach outing. Having never experienced such a trip before, Snickers was initially apprehensive but quickly embraced the adventure. She frolicked along the sand and felt the wind in her fur, clearly enjoying the newfound freedom.
After a fun day at the beach, the duo stopped for a special treat—ice cream—making it a memorable occasion for this previously neglected dog.
However, the most significant surprise was yet to come. Instead of returning Snickers to the street, Harbison brought her back to his facility for a health check-up and preparations for adoption.
“Her friendly, people-loving nature shines through in every visit,” Harbison wrote. “We could tell that she’d be happiest with a family of her own.”
Snickers’s Bright Future
Snickers is now listed for adoption as a one-year-old female mixed-breed dog weighing approximately thirty-five pounds. Her adoption page highlights her sweet and gentle spirit, emphasizing her talent for making people feel special with her daily surprises. “Snickers has captured every heart she meets, and it’s no wonder why! This sweet, gentle soul lived her life on the streets but never missed a chance to show us her love,” the listing states.
For Harbison, the decision to prioritize Snickers’s needs was difficult, given his larger mission. Still, her unique personality and affectionate nature made her stand out. “I knew I’d feel terrible if anything happened to her,” he admitted.
As Snickers awaits her forever home, Harbison remains hopeful that she will soon find the perfect family to shower her with love, a sentiment she is sure to return a thousand times over.
Yet, Snickers is not the only dog in need on Koh Samui; countless others require support through Happy Doggo. The charity continues to work tirelessly to find loving homes for these deserving animals, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in rescuing and caring for the island’s street dogs.
