In the quest for optimal dog care, pet owners often grapple with numerous questions, such as proper feeding amounts, walking routines, and grooming practices. However, one critical oversight during bath time is frequently highlighted by veterinarians and dog grooming specialists.
Dr. Cliff Faver, a veterinarian specializing in pet hair and skin health, emphasizes that many dog owners neglect to use conditioner after shampooing their pets. “Conditioning is a must, and that’s an area that a lot of people overlook,” he shares with 9Honey.
According to Dr. Faver, while thoroughly shampooing is essential for keeping dogs clean, it can inadvertently strip away the natural moisture from their skin. This is where conditioner comes into play. “If we’re just shampooing a dog, that’s great for cleaning but it strips the oils,” he explains. Without the application of a good conditioner afterward, dogs can develop dry skin, irritation, and even infections.
Proper conditioning replenishes moisture and maintains a healthy skin barrier. “When a dog is well-moisturized, those natural oils serve as a protective layer, keeping bacteria, dirt, and fungus at bay,” Dr. Faver notes. Conversely, neglecting to use conditioner creates an environment ripe for skin problems, as the lack of moisture allows bacteria to flourish.
Dr. Faver underscores the importance of moisturizing pets, stating that it not only restores vital oils but also alleviates the discomfort caused by dry skin. This November, he will bring his expertise to Australia, presenting a seminar titled “Hair and Skin 101 – The Basis of All Grooming,” aimed at educating both groomers and pet owners about effective hair and skin care for dogs.
As Dr. Faver succinctly puts it, “We have to realize that the skin is the largest organ in the body. So it’s important that we take care of it.”
