Unique Training Program Benefits Shelter Dogs and Incarcerated Volunteers

by Lisa

To help shelter dogs find loving homes, RR Professional Dog Training and Boarding has been offering its training services to local rescues, including the Douglas County Humane Society and Animal Allies. Owner Ram Reizel emphasizes the importance of providing these dogs with the same training that client dogs receive, often at a significant discount or even for free. “They get a dog that they can’t adopt out because it’s jumpy or mouthy, and our program gives the rescue a little bit of time to find that dog a home,” he explained.

Recognizing the growing demand for training services, RR Professional Dog Training and Boarding began collaborating with the Moose Lake Correctional Facility in 2017. This partnership revitalized the Ruff Start Dog Training Program, which had been previously run by another organization. In this initiative, shelter dogs that need training are vetted and then placed with incarcerated individuals who learn to train the dogs.

“The great thing about this program is that the dogs receive a lot of attention,” Reizel noted. “They live with the guys in the rooms, and they get care 24/7. The guys are very dedicated to the dogs.”

Empowerment Through Training

Incarcerated individuals play a significant role in the training process, guided by Reizel. One participant, Darrell, has been involved in the Ruff Start program since its inception. He shares how challenging it was at first but highlights the growth he’s experienced through the training. “I learned timing, consistency, and how the energy flows down the leash. It’s about being calm and assertive but playful at the same time,” he explained.

The program also honors the memory of Shirley Swensen, a key figure in its development, remembered fondly by Darrell as the “godmother of the dog program.”

Inside the training area, murals painted by incarcerated individuals reflect their commitment to the program. Keith, one of the artists, expressed his desire to give back, stating, “Giving back is who I am now. It’s something I haven’t done all this time while incarcerated.”

Transforming Lives

Each dog typically spends several weeks in the program, with their training tailored to their specific needs. Moises, another participant, has been involved for two and a half years. He appreciates the chance to work with dogs that may have never known love. “Many come in aggressive or distrustful of people. To see them change and feel cared for for probably the first time in their lives is amazing,” he said.

Hundreds of dogs have benefited from the program, and a wall of photos showcases those that have successfully found homes thanks to the dedicated training provided by the incarcerated volunteers. Reizel emphasizes that well-trained dogs lead to happier lives for both the dogs and their owners. “Anyone who has had a well-trained dog knows it’s much easier to live with a dog that understands what is expected of them,” he noted.

Healing Through Responsibility

For participants, the program offers more than just the opportunity to train dogs. Nicholas, who has been involved for over six months, shares how it has positively impacted his life. “I’ve experienced loss, and this program has helped me with grief and letting go. It’s also taught me responsibility and care,” he explained. “Seeing the change in ourselves as we work with these dogs is deeply emotional. It allows the compassionate nature to come out, reminding us that we’re not as hardened as we might think.”

This unique partnership not only enhances the lives of shelter dogs but also transforms the lives of those training them, fostering a sense of community and compassion that resonates far beyond the walls of the correctional facility.
