Dog Left Homeless After Pub Closure Seeks New Home

by Lisa

A seven-year-old dog, once a cherished companion at a local pub, is now seeking a forever home after being left homeless following the closure of the pub where he lived. Kayden, a Dutch Shepherd mixed with German Shepherd, was a well-known figure at the pub and adored being around people. However, after his owner lost both his pub and his home during the Covid pandemic, Kayden was left without a place to stay.

Rescued by Shads Legacy North Wales, a small animal rescue organization based in Oakenholt, near Flint, Kayden has spent the past two-and-a-half years in the shelter. Shads Legacy primarily focuses on rescuing shepherd and husky breeds, often saving dogs from euthanasia at local pounds. Kayden was one of the first dogs taken in by the rescue when it opened.

Despite the shelter’s best efforts, Kayden, now aged seven, remains hopeful for a life outside the rescue. A spokesperson for the organization expressed concern that he may never find a permanent home, saying, “Kayden loves being around people, so even with all the love the volunteers give him, he is very lonely in the shelter.” They added that, while Kayden has an extra-large kennel and enjoys daily walks, he becomes sad when it’s time to return to his pen.

Kayden, described as affectionate and playful, loves to cuddle and enjoys playing fetch. He is friendly with other dogs during walks, but would do best as an only pet in a home. He can be rehomed with children aged 10 and up, although his new owner should be experienced with larger dogs, as Kayden can be strong on the lead.

The rescue center, which is already operating at full capacity, has seen an increase in rescues in the wake of the Covid pandemic. Volunteers like Ellie Percival note that rising living costs have made it difficult for some pet owners to continue caring for their animals, leading to more dogs being surrendered to shelters.

“It’s a worry as we can’t rescue dogs we don’t have space for, meaning more will be put down,” Percival said, highlighting the growing strain on rescue centers across North Wales and beyond.
