November is Senior Pet Month, and in honor of it, the Fletcher’s Keep Senior Dog Foundation in North Okanagan is raising awareness for senior dogs and their owners in need of support. The foundation helps provide essential resources to elderly pets and their caregivers, ensuring these loyal companions remain in loving homes despite the financial hardships many senior pet owners face.
With the rising costs of living and pet care, many older pet owners are finding themselves in the heartbreaking position of potentially having to surrender or abandon their pets due to financial strain. Fletcher’s Keep is working to prevent this from happening by offering assistance with food, medical expenses, and emotional support for both pets and their owners.
The foundation relies on donations to continue its mission and has already helped numerous senior dogs in the community. The stories of these dogs highlight the difference a contribution can make, such as:
- Carl, a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees, whose owner, Rebecca, was unable to afford his pain medication. Thanks to Fletcher’s Keep, Rebecca could keep Carl at home, where he continues to serve as a therapy dog, offering comfort and joy.
- Joey, a blind senior dog, needed critical nutritional support and a dog ramp to safely access the outdoors. With the help of donor Rona, who provided materials and labor, Fletcher’s Keep built a custom ramp, allowing Joey to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
- Ella, an elderly dog in need of urgent dental care, faced the possibility of being separated from her owner due to financial limitations. Fletcher’s Keep stepped in, ensuring Ella received the necessary care to live comfortably and pain-free with her beloved owner.
These stories underscore the foundation’s mission: to prevent unnecessary abandonment and keep senior dogs in the homes where they are loved. The emotional and mental health benefits of these relationships are especially important for those who rely on their dogs for companionship and support, such as the elderly or those facing isolation.
As Giving Tuesday approaches, Fletcher’s Keep is urging the public to donate or create online fundraisers to help continue this life-saving work. “Even the smallest contribution can have a tremendous impact,” the foundation stated. Your support helps ensure that senior dogs are not left to suffer or be abandoned, but instead remain with their families and receive the care they deserve in their later years.
