The Gold Coast has bid a heartfelt farewell to Hondo, a beloved police dog who passed away after an illustrious seven-year career with the local police force. Known for his impressive track record, Hondo was involved in numerous high-profile arrests, including capturing a wanted criminal in 2015 and helping apprehend a teenage car thief earlier this year.
Throughout his service with the Gold Coast Dog Squad, Hondo worked closely with his handler, Nick Donald, who fondly recalls many memorable moments with his canine partner. One particularly remarkable instance occurred when Hondo located an offender hiding in a most unusual spot. “He went under a barbecue, and I thought he was after a snack,” said Donald. “But suddenly, the barbecue tipped over, and out came the offender, screaming as Hondo held him by the leg.”
Despite his tough reputation on the job, Hondo was a gentle companion at home. In his retirement, he enjoyed leisurely days filled with beach ball games and boating adventures.
After retiring from the force, Hondo was adopted by the Steel family, thanks to the support of the Blue Paws association, where he spent his final days in comfort and care. His legacy as a loyal and effective member of the force remains cherished by the Gold Coast community.
