For Kirstie and Scott McGough, their family may not include children, but their love for animals has made their home a sanctuary for rescue dogs. Over the past eight years, the couple has fostered countless dogs, often finding it impossible to part with them.
Their newest addition, Logan, a Shepherd mix, is not just a foster—he’s family. But Logan faces a dire challenge: a severe angular limb deformity in both front legs. Without urgent surgery, Logan’s ability to walk will continue to deteriorate, and his condition could become life-threatening.
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
The McGoughs first encountered Logan in August through Rez Dog Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing stray dogs in Southeast Montana. Logan, already suffering from his leg deformities, had cycled through foster homes but still lacked a permanent family. When Kirstie saw his story, she knew she had to help.
“We didn’t know what to expect medically, but we quickly realized the care he needed would be expensive,” Kirstie shared.
Initially, the couple thought surgery might be years away. But Logan’s condition has worsened rapidly, forcing them to act. The surgeries to correct both legs are estimated to cost $8,000 per leg—a staggering total that the McGoughs and Rez Dog Rescue cannot manage alone.
“We were told that if both front legs gave out and he didn’t have surgery, euthanasia would be the only option,” said Kirstie. “We’re doing everything we can to avoid that.”
Community Rises to the Challenge
Despite the daunting costs, the McGoughs and Rez Dog Rescue have refused to give up. They launched a fundraiser for Logan’s surgery, and the response has been heartening. In just three days, the campaign has raised over $6,000.
“We’re overwhelmed by the support,” said Scott McGough. “We don’t usually ask for help, but these dogs are like our kids. When we take one in, we do everything possible to give them the life they deserve.”
The McGoughs are also making personal sacrifices to cover Logan’s care. They’re selling their camper and taking extra shifts at work to contribute to the medical costs.
A Dog Worth Fighting For
Logan’s indomitable spirit inspires everyone around him. Despite his physical challenges, he remains energetic and playful, forming a special bond with the McGoughs’ other rescue dog, Kevin—who also came to them with severe injuries.
“They’re like one whole dog together,” Kirstie joked. “Logan doesn’t let his condition stop him. That’s what pushes us to fight even harder for him.”
Kristin, a volunteer with Rez Dog Rescue, echoed the sentiment. “Logan is special. He’s full of life and hasn’t given up. We just want to give him the second chance he deserves.”
How to Help
Logan’s story has touched hearts across the Billings community, but there’s still work to do. To contribute to Logan’s surgery fund, visit Rez Dog Rescue’s donation page or reach out to the organization directly.
For Kirstie and Scott, Logan is more than just another rescue—he’s a testament to resilience and love.
“He’s worth it,” said Kirstie. “Better than any toy, better than anything else. He’s family.”
