As winter approaches, the City of Evanston has announced that its beloved Dog Beach will remain open throughout the colder months, but users must adhere to specific safety regulations to ensure the well-being of both pets and their owners.
Winter Safety Measures
Snow and Ice:
Snow accumulation and icy conditions pose risks to both humans and dogs, including slips and falls. Visitors are advised to exercise extra caution while using the beach during these conditions.
No Salt Policy:
In an effort to protect the environmental integrity of Lake Michigan, the city has prohibited the use of any salt or deicing materials around the Dog Beach. This includes “pet-friendly” ice melts. The city is working alongside other municipalities to keep chloride, which is harmful to the lake, out of the water. If salt is used by any Dog Beach visitor, the area will be closed for the remainder of the winter season. Cooperation is key to preserving the beach’s natural resources.
Gate and Fence:
Extreme cold and wet weather may cause the gate combination lock to malfunction or freeze. The city will continue to maintain the gate as much as possible, but users should avoid forcing the lock open. Any issues should be promptly reported to the city’s 311 service.
Ice Shelf:
For safety reasons, visitors are warned to stay off the ice shelf. Walking or playing on the ice can be hazardous, posing risks to both individuals and pets.
Dog Waste Removal:
To prevent accidents during winter storms and avoid waste containers being swept into the lake, the orange and blue dog waste buckets will be removed by December 6. However, waste containers at the north and south entrances will remain available for use.
Wash-down Hose:
Due to the cold temperatures, the wash-down hose will be turned off for the winter season.
2025 Dog Beach Passes:
Dog Beach passes for the 2025 season will be available starting February 17, 2025. The new season will officially begin on March 3, 2025. Pet owners are reminded to ensure their pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and to obtain the 2025 City of Evanston pet license.
Potential Closures
The city reserves the right to close the Dog Beach at any time if necessary, particularly in response to weather conditions or safety concerns. Notifications about closures will be sent to Dog Beach email subscribers, and signs will be posted at the entrance.
Reminder
Dogs are not allowed on any other beach, or on basketball or tennis courts within the city parks. All dogs must be leashed when in city parks.
For more information or to address any concerns, residents are encouraged to contact the Parks and Recreation Department by calling 847-448-4311 or by dialing 311.
By adhering to these winter guidelines, visitors can continue to enjoy Dog Beach responsibly while ensuring the safety and preservation of this valuable community space.
