Can You Bring Pets on a Cruise? What Passengers Need to Know

by Lisa

While most cruise lines do not allow pets, there’s a growing trend that’s making waves in the industry: dog-friendly cruises. For pet owners who want to set sail with their furry companions, these special cruises offer a unique experience, but they are still the exception rather than the rule.

“Most cruise lines only allow service animals onboard,” explained Sally French, Travel Expert at NerdWallet. “Emotional support animals generally aren’t permitted, as they are not classified as service animals under most regulations.”

Before booking, French recommends reviewing the specific policies of the cruise line. For example, Carnival Cruise Line only permits service dogs, which are defined as animals individually trained to assist individuals with disabilities. Passengers traveling with service dogs must bring their own food, use designated relief areas for their pets, and adhere to other rules such as keeping the dog on a leash.

Service animals may also be required to meet documentation standards, including proof of training and vaccination records. Some cruise lines impose restrictions on where service dogs are allowed to go onboard.

However, not all cruise lines have such restrictive policies. Cunard Line, for instance, is known for its more pet-friendly approach. The company provides onboard kennels for dogs and cats on its Queen Mary 2 ship, which operates transatlantic crossings. To ease homesickness, Cunard has even placed a lamppost from Liverpool and a New York City fire hydrant onboard to give British and American dogs a touch of familiarity.

For pet owners eager to take their dogs on a more festive voyage, the Margaritaville at Sea Islander ship will host a dog-friendly cruise next year, featuring dog costume contests and parades. French describes this cruise as “far more celebratory” and a response to the increasing demand for pet-friendly travel experiences.

While taking your pet on a cruise may not be an option for most travelers, these exceptions reflect a growing trend of accommodating furry companions, making it easier for some to enjoy a vacation without leaving their pets behind.
