South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) has initiated a public consultation to gather opinions on potential new regulations for dog walking. The survey seeks community input on whether a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) should be introduced to limit the number of dogs one person can walk on a lead at any given time.
The consultation, which is open to local residents, animal welfare groups, and businesses, comes in response to growing concerns about dog walkers managing large groups of dogs in public spaces. The RSPCA has recommended that no more than four dogs should be walked by a single person at once.
Councillor Phil Gadd, representing the Belmont Ward in Grantham, explained that he had received complaints from two local residents about large packs of dogs being walked off-lead in the area. “We need to test the waters and see if there’s support for this idea. If it’s not backed, it won’t proceed,” he said. “It’s about engaging with the community and listening to their views.”
Councillor Rhea Rayside, the council’s cabinet member for people and communities, emphasized that this initial stage of the consultation was designed to give residents an opportunity to voice their concerns. She also highlighted the importance of considering the potential impact the new rules could have on local businesses and residents.
If the consultation reveals support for the proposal, SKDC will move forward with further discussions, with the possibility of implementing a PSPO for up to three years.
