A new competition launched by Bath-based workplace design firm Interaction is on a mission to find the UK’s best office dog, with the aim of highlighting the important role that dogs play in enhancing workplace wellbeing. The competition, which is set to run throughout 2025, encourages dog owners across the UK to nominate their canine colleagues by sharing a photo of their pets in the office.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, households in the UK acquired 3.2 million pets, a significant number of which were dogs. As employees return to office settings, Interaction sees an opportunity to support dog-friendly policies in workplaces. These policies can help employees feel more comfortable returning to the office, while also reducing stress and improving engagement. By showcasing the positive impact of dogs in the workplace, the competition aims to inspire businesses to embrace pet-friendly practices.
How the Competition Works
Each month throughout 2025, one office dog will be crowned a winner and receive a doggy prize box from Bella’s Box. The winning dog’s office will also receive a hamper filled with goodies for its human colleagues. At the end of the year, the competition will culminate in a grand finale to crown Britain’s Best Office Dog, with the top prize being a luxurious two-night stay at one of Britain’s finest canine-friendly hotels for the winning dog and its owner.
A panel of experts will judge the entries, including Emily Birch, a clinical animal behaviourist and owner of The Office Dog, a consultancy that helps businesses create pet-friendly workspaces. Also judging will be Dr. Eloise Warrilow, an occupational psychologist and researcher specializing in dog-friendly workplaces, and Garry James, a marketing expert from FOUNDRY, a dog-friendly coworking space.
Why Dogs Matter in the Workplace
Dieter Wood, managing director of Interaction, emphasized that while office design and furniture are important, nothing can replicate the positive energy, unconditional love, and occasional chaos that a dog can bring to the workplace. Wood pointed out that dogs contribute significantly to morale, mental health, and productivity in the workplace. This competition is an effort to celebrate the furry companions who make offices better, and to encourage businesses to think creatively about supporting their teams.
To enter the competition, dog owners are encouraged to submit a great photo of their dog at work and include stories or anecdotes about how their dog adds joy to the office environment. The competition aims to shine a light on the benefits of dogs in workplaces and inspire more businesses to become dog-friendly.
