This morning, Natasha, our beloved dog, lost the race for life. After six months of battling with the help of medication, her heart could no longer keep up. Once a vibrant, joyful companion who would happily trot down the trails she adored, Natasha’s energy waned over time, and there were nights when we feared she wouldn’t make it through until morning.
We always knew that the hardest decision would come when the time came to say goodbye, but it doesn’t make the reality any easier. The drugs had stopped working, and the inevitable moment had arrived when we had to do what was best for her, the ultimate act of love and compassion for an animal that had given us so much.
As she lay there, still and silent, Rudyard Kipling’s famous line echoed in my mind: “Why do we give our heart to a dog to tear?” It’s a question every pet owner grapples with at some point, as we inevitably find ourselves giving our hearts to creatures who may not live as long as we do.
We had ten wonderful years with Natasha—years filled with love, intelligence, grace, and unwavering loyalty. She was a constant presence in our home, her affection never in doubt. Now, our home feels emptier without her. While time will heal, we know we will never forget the joy and love she brought into our lives. We will adjust, but she will always have a place in our hearts.
