Boston Woman Warns Pet Owners After Dog Ingests Rat Poison Left on Sidewalk

by Lisa

A concerned Boston woman is urging fellow pet owners to be vigilant after her dog ingested rat poison during a routine walk in the Brighton neighborhood.

Heather Seeley was out walking her beagle, Bruno, when the dog sniffed through leaves and picked up a small, hard object. Initially, she thought it was a dental treat, as it was green and had a similar texture to dog chews designed to clean teeth. Without a second thought, she tossed the object into a nearby trash barrel. However, the next day, Bruno grabbed another object that seemed identical, this time quickly chewing it before Heather could intervene.

Upon discovering the discarded item, Heather conducted an online search, which led to the alarming realization: Bruno had ingested rat poison.

“I thought it was a treat at first. I didn’t think twice about it. But when it happened again, I knew something was wrong,” Seeley said. “I just hope the doctors are able to save my boy.”

Thanks to her quick thinking, Heather rushed Bruno to emergency care. Blood tests confirmed that he had ingested a portion of the poison, and he now requires close monitoring as the treatment process continues.

“I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I know how important our dogs are to us,” she added, stressing the importance of vigilance.

Heather, who lives near Kilsyth Road in Brighton, is unsure who left the toxic bait in the area. She described the small, hard blocks as looking similar to chalk or treats, making them appear harmless. She’s now sounding the alarm for other dog owners—and even parents with young children—about the potential danger.

“I’ve seen rat traps before, but they’re usually designed in a way that dogs can’t access them,” Seeley explained. “I’ve never seen anything like this, so I want people to be on the lookout.”

Local authorities have not identified the source of the rat poison, but residents are encouraged to stay alert while walking pets or children in the area.
