The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall on a popular brand of dog treats sold across 19 states, following concerns over potential Salmonella contamination. This recall, which is considered the most serious by the FDA, highlights a risk that could lead to severe health consequences or even death for pets and their owners.
Carolina Prime Pet, Inc., based in North Carolina, voluntarily recalled 400 bags of Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips dog treats on November 22, 2024. The recall was prompted after tests revealed Salmonella contamination in the product, which could affect both pets and humans handling the treats.
The Risk of Salmonella
Salmonella infection can cause a range of symptoms in both humans and pets. In humans, it commonly leads to diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In dogs, symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. The infection can be especially dangerous if humans come into contact with contaminated food or infected animals.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually in the United States. As such, the recall serves as a preventive measure to avoid the potential spread of this bacterium.
Affected States and Products
The recalled Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips were distributed to retailers in 19 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Consumers in these states who have purchased the affected product are urged to stop using it immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. However, the FDA’s warning is meant to prevent any possible contamination.
Previous Recalls
This recall follows a similar incident in November 2024, when the FDA also issued a Class I recall for Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips produced by Gaines Pet Treats LLC. That recall involved 204 bags of chicken-flavored dog treats after third-party testing found Salmonella in an unreleased batch. Though no illnesses were reported in that case, the company and the FDA took swift action to remove the products from circulation and protect both pets and their owners.
Consumers who have purchased these recalled dog treats are advised to dispose of them properly or return them for a refund, in line with the FDA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public health.
