A 1-year-old black Labrador named Scout has been hailed a Christmas miracle after surviving two weeks alone and returning home on Christmas Day. Scout had run away from his foster home earlier this month, leaving his rescuers anxious and heartbroken.
Nadine McCaffery, a volunteer with Rhode Home Rescue, was devastated when the energetic dog fled after an accident. “I thought it was over. I thought it was over. It was very emotional,” McCaffery recalled. Determined to bring Scout back safely, she and her team immediately launched an extensive search effort.
Scout’s last known sighting was in the woods after being hit by a car. Despite a dedicated search, including drones and flyers, the lab remained missing for two weeks, leaving his rescuers increasingly worried.
Then, on Christmas Day, a miracle occurred. McCaffery received the call that Scout had returned to the street of his foster home. “She heard some dog commotion out in the yard, and she looked out in the yard, and Scout was there with her dog, attempting to play—a true Christmas miracle,” McCaffery said.
Though Scout’s return was joyful, his journey was far from easy. The pup suffered an injury to his leg, which will require amputation. He is currently receiving treatment at an animal hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The rescue group, which is entirely volunteer-run, is now facing the challenge of covering Scout’s medical costs. “Once he’s a Rhode Home dog, he’s always a Rhode Home dog,” McCaffery shared, urging supporters to donate to help cover his expenses. “Every penny counts.”
Reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster, McCaffery expressed gratitude for Scout’s survival. “It was pouring rain, and then it was freezing cold right after the rain. After being hit by a car, wet and freezing, I wasn’t holding out much hope. But he was okay. And Santa brought us a present.”
Scout’s miraculous return has not only provided relief to his rescuers but also a heartwarming reminder of hope during the holiday season.
