A renowned dog trainer has shared his insights on the three dog breeds he would choose to work with if limited to just a select few. One breed, in particular, has been crowned the “king of all dog breeds” for its exceptional traits that make it a standout for families.
Will Atherton, a professional dog trainer with a strong following on TikTok, recently revealed the breeds he holds in the highest regard, highlighting their unique characteristics like trainability, loyalty, and intelligence. His video, which has garnered over 42,000 likes from dog lovers, gives a glimpse into the dogs he feels are truly exceptional.
Among the three breeds he selected, one stands out as the ultimate family companion: the Cane Corso.
Cane Corso: The “King” of Dog Breeds
The Cane Corso, an imposing and powerful breed from the mastiff family, is a dog that combines strength with protective instincts. Atherton, a self-proclaimed fan of mastiffs, praised the Cane Corso for its versatility. While these dogs were originally bred for guarding properties and hunting, Atherton pointed out that beneath their tough exterior lies a gentle and loving nature, especially when it comes to their families.
He explained: “Number one would be the Cane Corso. Of all the mastiff breeds, I’m torn between the English Mastiff and the Cane Corso. But if I had to choose, I’d go with the Cane Corso due to fewer common health issues and slightly better athleticism, which makes them more enjoyable on walks.”
However, he cautioned potential owners that Cane Corsos require dedicated training and early socialization to thrive, as they can be challenging for first-time dog owners.
German Shepherd: A Close Second
Coming in at a close second is the German Shepherd, another breed that shares similar qualities of intelligence and loyalty. Known for their remarkable versatility, German Shepherds excel in a wide range of roles, including police, military, search-and-rescue, and therapy work.
Atherton highlighted their intelligence and trainability, adding, “The German Shepherd is one of the best all-around breeds. They can adapt to almost any task.” However, he also warned prospective owners about their tendency to bark excessively, which could become a challenge for those not prepared for it.
These highly skilled dogs, with their loyal and courageous temperament, can be an excellent addition to any family, provided they receive proper training and socialization from an early age.
While these two breeds are certainly Atherton’s top picks, his recommendations reflect a broader understanding of what makes a great family dog: a balance of strength, intelligence, and a loving nature.
