Fire crews in Ottawa successfully rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice on the Ottawa River on Monday afternoon, December 30, 2024. The rescue occurred near the Blair Road Boat Launch, after the dog’s owners called 911 around 2:55 p.m. to report that their pet, named “Tika,” was stranded on an ice shelf about 30 feet from shore.
Upon arrival, Ottawa Fire Services’ ice rescue teams found the dog struggling to stay afloat in the frigid water. The rescue crews quickly mobilized, with one firefighter using a specialized tool known as a fortuna to reach the distressed animal.
“We deployed our Ice Rescue Technicians who acted swiftly, and by 3:20 p.m., Tika was safely back on solid ground and in good condition,” Ottawa Fire Services said in a social media post.
The fire department praised the dog’s owners for their quick thinking, noting that they made the right decision by calling emergency services and avoiding any attempt to rescue the dog themselves. “Our teams are highly trained and equipped to handle these situations,” the post continued, emphasizing the importance of staying safe and giving pets the best chance for survival.
As temperatures remain low, fire services continue to warn the public about the dangers of walking on thin ice, urging people to prioritize safety during winter months.
Tika’s owners have expressed their gratitude for the prompt and efficient response of Ottawa’s fire rescue team.
