FDA Issues Urgent Recall on Dog Treats Sold in 19 States Due to Salmonella Risk

by Lisa

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall—the agency’s most serious risk level—on Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips dog treats due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall, initiated by North Carolina-based Carolina Prime Pet, Inc., affects 400 bags of the popular product, sold both online and in physical stores across 19 states.

A Class I recall is issued when there is a reasonable probability that exposure to a product could cause serious health consequences or death. In this case, the contamination poses risks to both pets and humans, especially those who handle the affected treats or come into contact with infected animals. Salmonella, a bacteria commonly linked to foodborne illness, can cause severe symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps in humans. In dogs, the infection may lead to lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

The contaminated treats were distributed in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Consumers who have purchased the affected dog treats are urged to stop using them immediately and return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.

This recall follows a similar action taken in November 2024, when Gaines Pet Treats LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama, recalled 204 bags of “Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips” due to potential salmonella contamination. Although no illnesses were reported in either case, the recalls were issued as a precautionary measure to safeguard both pets and their owners from the health risks posed by contaminated products.

Consumers are advised to check their homes for the affected dog treats and to dispose of them appropriately to prevent further exposure to salmonella.
