In a significant shift for pet owners in Okotoks, the town has removed the requirement for dog licenses, effective January 1, 2025. This change comes after amendments to the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw were approved during the town’s 2025 Budget Meeting on November 19, 2024.
As a result of these amendments, Okotoks residents who own dogs no longer need to register their pets with the town. However, there are still a few essential requirements for dog owners to keep in mind. While dog licensing is no longer mandatory, each dog must still wear visible identification—either on a collar or harness—that includes the owner’s current phone number. This ensures that lost dogs can be easily returned to their owners.
For those who own four or more dogs, an Animal Fancier & Adoption License is still required. This special license must be submitted for approval to the town’s Municipal Enforcement Services.
Despite the elimination of dog licenses, all other aspects of the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw remain in effect, meaning pet owners must still adhere to the rules regarding the care and treatment of their animals.
The decision to abolish the dog licensing requirement is seen as a move toward simplifying regulations for pet owners while still ensuring public safety and animal welfare.
