Retired Police Dog Saves Lost Hiker, Honored with Lifesaver Award

by Lisa

In a remarkable tale of heroism, a retired police dog in the UK has proven that the instinct to serve never truly fades. Bear, a 12-year-old German Shepherd, sprang back into action during a routine walk, rescuing a lost hiker and earning the prestigious Lifesaver Award from the Thin Blue Paw Foundation.

The event occurred on November 28, when Bear was out for a walk to aid in his recovery after undergoing surgery to remove tumors. His owners, Julia and Ian Pope—both retired officers—had taken him to the South Downs in southern England to celebrate his 12th birthday. It was during this walk that Bear’s remarkable sense of duty was reignited.

While meandering through the brush, Bear led Julia and Ian to a man who had fallen and was unable to move. Wet, confused, and disoriented, the hiker had been the subject of an active search by authorities. Bear, however, instinctively found him, potentially saving his life.

Bear’s previous service as a general police dog had seen him locate multiple individuals who might not have survived without his keen nose. However, his heroic actions went largely unrecognized at the time, as he and his handler were simply doing their jobs.

Following the rescue, Bear was nominated for the Lifesaver Award by either the Thin Blue Paw Foundation or Sussex Police, and the award ceremony took place at Sussex Police Headquarters. Julia Pope described the recognition as “completely unexpected,” expressing immense pride in Bear’s continued dedication.

“For him to get this award now, in his retirement, and for his former handler, Iain, to have been there too, is very special. We’re all super proud of him,” Julia said, highlighting the bond between the dog and his team.

Bear’s story is a poignant reminder that true heroes never retire, and their legacy of service endures well beyond their active years.
