The Training Journey of Internet – Celebrity Police Dog “Fu Zai”

by Barbara Wilson

Recently, in the Weifang Public Security Bureau police dog base, more than a year old Internet red police dog “Fu Zai” with its strong short legs hurried through the training ground. Fu Tsai is the first corgi police dog in China, and it is hard to associate him with traditional police dogs with his honest demeanor and shaking head.

A “lean”, rich Zai immediately rushed to the left of the coach Zhao Qingshuai, obediently sat down. Zhao Qingshuai, a young man born in the 1990s, although he looks young, has been training dogs for 11 years. Three years ago, with his expertise in animal husbandry and extensive experience in dog training, he became a police dog handler.

“Now, as long as I see a puppy, I can quickly figure out its habits and determine if it has the potential to be a good police dog or a great pet,” Zhao said. Through the Ministry of Public Security four-level police dog assessment, the official “join the team” of Fu Zai, is found by him.

Fu Zai is a male corgi from Changle County. There is a small park in the east of Changle County Public Security Bureau police dog base. Foo’s original owner used to take him there. Zhao Qingshuai asked for the dog’s name. Upon learning that it was “Fu Zai”, he called out from a distance, and to his surprise, the dog immediately ran towards him. “At that moment, I sensed that the dog’s ability to interact with humans was very strong. So I tried to convince the original owner to send him to the police dog base for training. Maybe it could pass some evaluation and become a police dog, “Zhao recalled. He added that even if Fu Zai does not become a police dog after training, he will definitely be a pet that understands “commands” and can become a “star” in the pet industry.

As the only corgi police dog in the country, his short legs actually give him an advantage. “When performing explosion search missions, its physical characteristics allow it to move more flexibly through narrow Spaces to reach areas that would otherwise be difficult to access,” Zhao explained. At key checkpoints such as airports, railways and highways, bomb dogs rely mainly on smell. Small corgis with short legs can sniff out objects horizontally, unlike larger dogs that have to keep their heads very low. As a result, they feel less tired and can work longer. However, training Fu Zai is no easy task for Zhao.

Every day, in the training base can see Zhao Qingshuai light figure. The reporter followed him for five minutes and was out of breath. “Every movement needs to be taught patiently. A single movement takes about 28 days of practice to become ingrained. For example, if a dog can’t lie down properly, it won’t be able to alert for explosives. A command must be repeated tens of thousands of times over a period of six months until the dog hears the command and develops muscle memory.” He also points out that dogs have a bit of a rebellious streak. For example, when walking a dog on the street, it is common to see the owner struggling to hold onto the leash while the dog tries to charge forward with little control.

In public places with many people, dogs are easily distracted, which can affect their judgment. To train an excellent police dog, there must be a good understanding between the trainer and the police dog. Every command, even a glance, should be understood by the dog. “He’s not just a dog; He is my colleague, comrade and friend. After training, on weekends, I take him home. Sometimes, I take him to the park or the square for a walk, or even to the pet store for a bath. At night, when he sleeps, the air box next to my bed is his nest. Dogs need to feel safe in an unfamiliar environment, and sleeping next to me makes it easier for them to trust their handlers, “Zhao told reporters.

Zhao Qingshuai is full of enthusiasm and joy for his work. “Some people think that training police dogs is dirty and tiring because they have to clean and groom police dogs every day, so many people don’t like this profession. However, the job of a trainer is no different from any other police function; It’s all about serving the people.” Looking at each police dog, Zhao Qingshuai’s eyes were full of warmth. “A coach can train a few dogs, but in the eyes of each dog, I am his whole world.”
