A Tibetan Mastiff named Sprout has undergone an incredible transformation, not only in appearance but in spirit, thanks to the dedicated efforts of a Chicago-based rescue organization.
One Tail at a Time (OTAT), a local pet rescue and community initiative, shared Sprout’s heartwarming recovery story on social media. The rescue was initially alerted by Chicago Animal Care & Control, who notified them of a stray dog in dire condition. OTAT responded swiftly, sending a team to retrieve the distressed dog within an hour.
When they found Sprout, she was dragging more than 30 pounds of matted fur, soiled with urine and feces. The team immediately got to work, preparing the Tibetan Mastiff for a much-needed grooming procedure. In the video shared by OTAT, staff members are seen in full protective gear as they carefully lift Sprout onto an operating table. Under sedation, they began the painstaking task of shaving off the painful mats that had been causing severe discomfort and a raging skin infection.
The team successfully removed 32.4 pounds of matted fur, which had been tugging at Sprout’s skin, causing constant pain and restricting her movement. The difference was immediate—Sprout could now walk, urinate, defecate, and lay down without pain for the first time in who knows how long. “She is why we keep going,” OTAT wrote in a heartfelt caption.
As the dog continues to recover, OTAT announced that Sprout is now in a loving foster home, where she is receiving treatment for her skin infection. In photos shared on their social media, the transformation is clear. Sprout is now comfortable and relaxed, snuggling on a couch, surrounded by warmth and care.
In a final post on January 10, OTAT celebrated Sprout’s progress, saying, “In just a few days, Sprout has gone from a stray in need of medical attention to being hand-fed warm food and enjoying the comforts of a cozy home.” The rescue team expressed gratitude for their community’s support and promised to keep everyone updated on Sprout’s journey.
OTAT’s dedication and the community’s ongoing support have given this resilient dog a new chance at life—one filled with comfort, care, and hope.
