Top Three Dog Breeds with the Best Behaviour, According to Expert Trainer

by Lisa

Leading dog trainer and behaviourist, Will Atherton, has shared his expert opinion on the three dog breeds he considers to be the most well-behaved, thanks to their low likelihood of developing bad habits.

Atherton, who is widely respected in the dog training community, named the Labrador Retriever as his top pick, calling them “the best dog breed in the world.” Known for their friendly and sociable nature, Labradors are typically well-behaved, though Atherton notes that leash pulling can be a common issue. He attributes this behaviour to their enthusiasm for meeting new people and other dogs. However, with proper training, Atherton asserts, this issue is easy to resolve: “It’s dead easy to dial those things in,” he said confidently.

Next on his list is the English Mastiff, praised for its calm and laid-back temperament. These large dogs are generally easy-going and non-aggressive, making them ideal companions for families looking for a gentle giant. Atherton describes them as one of the best breeds, thanks to their placid nature.

Finally, Atherton included the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed he commends for its affectionate personality. While acknowledging the breed’s health issues, such as heart problems, he still ranks them highly for their temperament. Fans of the breed were quick to agree, with one commenting, “I knew a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would be on there.” However, some potential owners expressed hesitation, citing health concerns as a major factor in their decision-making. One veterinary nurse mentioned, “I got one knowing I’d have to deal with heart issues.”

Despite the praise, not everyone agrees with Atherton’s assessment. A dog walker countered his comments, stating that she often encounters “horrifically behaved Labradors” during her walks. Another critic suggested, “Just because you work with something doesn’t mean you’re an expert.”

The debate highlights the varied experiences dog owners can have with different breeds, even those generally considered well-behaved by experts.
