Meet ‘Stevie Wonder’, a Blind Dog in Franklin County Searching for a Home

by Lisa

Stevie Wonder, a three-year-old Labrador retriever mix, has won hearts with his sweet, resilient nature despite being blind. Nicknamed for his angelic demeanor, complete with a halo, Stevie has captured the attention of social media users and animal lovers alike.

Stevie was discovered at a shelter in Franklin County, where he had been brought in as a stray. His situation was grim: severely underweight, scared, and suffering from blindness. Anna Russell, a volunteer with Paws for Life NC, the nonprofit rescue organization that took him in, shared, “We thought he was probably about 12 years old. He was pretty emaciated.” Given his age, blindness, and frailty, his chances of survival at the shelter were slim.

The rescue group took Stevie to a veterinarian, where they learned he was actually much younger than initially thought—just three years old. Sadly, they also discovered that his blindness was congenital: Stevie was born with underdeveloped eyes that never fully formed. He had likely seen shadows as a puppy but has been completely blind for his entire life.

Despite his condition, Stevie’s spirits have lifted thanks to the care and support he received from the volunteers. Russell describes Stevie as a “lovebug” who loves to run, play, and interact with other dogs. His blindness hasn’t stopped him from living life to the fullest, and with the right guidance, he navigates his world well.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Stevie’s journey has been the gift of a Muffin’s Halo for Blind Dogs, which has made a world of difference. The halo helps Stevie detect his surroundings, allowing him to explore safely without bumping into obstacles. Russell says, “Providing he has consistency and he learns his backyard and where he can walk in the house, he does absolutely wonderful.”

Paws for Life NC, which has been saving animals for over two decades, is seeking a home for Stevie where he will receive the love and care he deserves. Stevie will need a patient and understanding family, ideally with a fenced yard to ensure he can safely enjoy the outdoors. He’s friendly with other dogs, which makes him a great companion for families with pets.

Russell, reflecting on the rescue organization’s work, says, “Even though we’re all volunteers, it just brings so much joy to be able to take these broken, sick animals from the shelter that have been abandoned, some of them abused, and to be able to bring them into our homes, bring them to the vet, and give them the care, love, and support that they need.”

For Stevie, finding a loving home would mean a chance at a fresh start and a life filled with joy, despite the challenges he faces.
