Roxy, a one-year-old terrier mix, was a dog full of fear and distrust when she was surrendered to the New York nonprofit Four Legs Good at the end of November. Having endured numerous negative experiences with humans, Roxy was “terrified” of anyone who tried to approach her. But thanks to the patience and care of her foster parent, Rachel Oldenburger, Roxy’s transformation into a trusting and affectionate companion has been a heartwarming success story.
Oldenburger shared Roxy’s nearly monthlong journey on Instagram (@rachels.dogs) with a time-lapse video that shows the dog’s gradual process of learning to trust humans again. When Roxy first arrived at the shelter, she was visibly petrified, shaking, with her tail tucked between her legs. She refused to make eye contact with Oldenburger, signaling how deeply her trauma had affected her.
Determined to help, Oldenburger started slowly by taking Roxy on silent walks around the shelter, focusing on being a calm, supportive presence for the dog. As the days went by, Roxy began to relax, realizing that she was safe and not in danger. The breakthrough came after a few weeks, when Roxy finally began to accept treats and pets and even showcased her ability to sit on command.
Oldenburger celebrated a pivotal moment when, on day 19, Roxy sought out attention for the first time. “It was a huge moment,” Oldenburger wrote in the Instagram caption. By day 35, Roxy was fully embracing her new life. She was seen joyfully rolling over for belly rubs and confidently enjoying her walks with other dogs.
The support didn’t stop with Oldenburger. Other shelter volunteers, like Christina, played an essential role in Roxy’s progress, further strengthening her confidence and ability to connect with humans. The video shows Roxy’s blossoming personality, moving from a frightened, defensive dog to a playful and loving companion.
Although still a little timid around new people, Roxy is now ready to find her forever home. Four Legs Good is accepting adoption inquiries, with potential adopters encouraged to reach out to the shelter .
The Instagram video, which has already garnered over 13,000 views and widespread admiration, has resonated deeply with viewers, many of whom praised Oldenburger for her dedication. One commenter expressed, “Awww I love her progress. Thank you for all you do!” Another added, “Thank you for what you are doing for these angels.”
This inspiring story highlights the incredible power of patience, love, and dedication in helping a dog overcome fear and trauma to become a trusting, happy pet.
