Family Mourns Loss of Loyal Dog in Stoughton House Fire

by Lisa

A local family is grieving the loss of their beloved 7-year-old Australian Shepherd, Leo, who perished in a devastating house fire that broke out on December 29. Leo’s family describes him as a faithful protector who held a special place in their hearts.

Katelyn Cornelissen, her partner Jordan White, and their young daughter, Ryleigh, had left their home on West Vanston Road for a brief visit to Starbucks that morning. Within minutes of their return, they were met with an overwhelming sight: their home was consumed by smoke. Despite swift action from the local fire department, only their other dog, Koda, was rescued.

“We only went out for a short time, and when we came back, everything was in flames,” Cornelissen recalled. “Leo was everything to us, and we are devastated.”

The Cornelissen family had adopted Koda in 2017, and after 45 days, they welcomed Leo into their home to keep Koda company. From that moment on, Leo and Koda formed an inseparable bond.

“Leo was the perfect addition to our family,” Cornelissen said, recalling the joy he brought. “There are no words to describe how amazing he was.”

Beyond being a loyal companion to Koda, Leo formed a special connection with Ryleigh, the family’s 16-month-old daughter.

“Leo was always close to Ryleigh,” Cornelissen shared. “He had his head on my belly when I was pregnant, and he always protected her.”

In a heartbreaking moment, when firefighters searched the house for the dogs, they found Leo in the playpen where Ryleigh often played. Cornelissen said the firefighters informed her of Leo’s final act of devotion.

While the loss of their dog has been overwhelming, the family is finding solace in the outpouring of support from the community.

“We’ve been touched by the love, generosity, and kindness shown by our neighbors and everyone around us,” Cornelissen expressed. “We are truly grateful for the support.”

In addition to losing their pet, the family’s home, a cherished property passed down through generations, was destroyed in the blaze. As the family faces the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $27,000 to aid in their recovery.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for their help,” the fundraiser’s organizer said. “We still need all the support we can get, so please continue to share and donate if possible.”

Though the loss of Leo has left an irreplaceable void in their lives, the Cornelissen family’s gratitude for the community’s support is a bright light in this dark time.
