West Bridgewater Dog Trainer Works to Find Home for ‘DD the Dumped Dog’

by Lisa

Shawn Flipp, the owner and trainer at Apex K9 in West Bridgewater, has a special mission on his hands: finding the perfect home for DD, a dog who was abandoned and tied to a pole near his facility. DD, whose name stands for “Dumped Dog,” was left in the woods on the evening of December 30, and Flipp’s quick action has made her a local hero.

Flipp received a call from one of his clients, who had heard about the abandoned dog through a police scanner. The dog was tied to a pole across from his facility near a liquor store, and Flipp immediately mobilized his volunteers to help. By the time they arrived, DD had been untied but was not responding to the police. However, Flipp’s team was able to gain her trust and lure her into a car.

DD’s story quickly gained attention. Flipp posted about the incident in a local Facebook group, and his post received an outpouring of support, with 171 comments from concerned residents.

The Journey to Apex K9

When Flipp and his team brought DD to Apex K9, they learned that a shopper had seen someone walk her into the woods and then return alone. Flipp, who had never encountered a dog abandoned so close to his facility, was shaken. “If she would have stayed out there longer, a coyote would have gotten her,” he said.

Flipp estimated DD was about a year old and was in decent condition. She had a heavy coat, which made him think she might have been an outside dog. DD was initially fearful, and it took her about a week to warm up to Flipp. “I don’t think she was used to being on a leash,” he said, which prompted him to dig deeper into her past.

Investigating Her Background

Flipp had DD scanned for a microchip, but as he suspected, there was none. Unfortunately, there were no leads on the person who abandoned DD, and the “shopper” who witnessed the incident has not come forward. Despite these challenges, Flipp is determined to find DD a loving home.

Finding DD a Forever Home

In just three weeks, DD has made great progress, forming bonds with people, other dogs, and even cats. Flipp has received significant interest in adopting her, with five potential adopters and more people calling each day. However, Flipp is being selective. “If we can’t find the right fit, she isn’t leaving,” he said.

DD has already started meeting potential adopters, including a mother with children. Flipp is being cautious, knowing that DD’s journey of healing and trust may need time to fully unfold. He is committed to ensuring that DD’s new home is a safe and loving environment. “If it doesn’t work out, the dog is coming back to me,” Flipp emphasized. “She deserves a good home.”

What If the Original Owner Comes Forward?

Flipp made it clear that if DD’s original owner attempts to reclaim her, it won’t be an easy process. “Her original owner would have to go through the police to get this dog back because she is not going back to that environment,” he said.

Even after DD is placed in her new home, Flipp will continue to be involved. To ensure DD’s transition is smooth, he’s offering a free six-class obedience package to any new adopter. This will help both DD and her new family build a solid foundation and foster the right relationship.

Flipp’s dedication to DD’s well-being and his mission to find her the perfect home reflect the commitment of a professional dog trainer who understands the importance of a loving and supportive environment for all dogs.
